BCMSDL Speech Competition
BCMSDL's first ever Speech Competition was created to keep debate alive during COVID-19 when most debate clubs and organizations have stopped for the time being. The speech competition was similar to a classic rebuttal drill where debaters give a rebuttal to a speech on a random topic. In this competition, debaters responded to an affirmative speech on the Resolved: Middle School students should not own smartphones. We took the stance that smartphones are dangerous for middle school students and received numerous quality refutations! All of the rebuttal speeches we received exceeded our expectations so we would like to thank each and every participant for exemplifying what BCMSDL is all about: high quality public speaking and debating.
The winners of BCMSDL's first ever speech competition were selected by a number of highly trained judges. Each winning participant displayed aspects of debate that are at the cornerstone of BCMSDL's debate curriculum, earning them all awards certificates. The first place entry additionally received a 25$ gift card to a store of their choice. Below are the winners!
1st Place: Jason Chae, Englewood Cliffs Upper School
2nd Place: Claire Sim, Harrington Park School
3rd Place: Madhav Dua, Valley Middle School
Congratulations to all winners and participants for making this event possible! Check back in the future for more debate opportunities and competitions!
